Unit 4 Worksheets

Week 11

Film Choice: Her. Dir. Spike Jonze. Perf. Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson. Warner Brothers, 2013. GOmovies. Web. 24 March 2018.

Screenshot of Interior Scene:

Brief Description of Scene: The main character, Theodore, walks into his apartment from work.

Description & Explanation of How the 2 Architectural Elements Relate to Protagonist:

Shelves: The horizontal shelves in the foreground represent the jail bars that keep Theodore in his small, sad bubble. In the beginning he is quite melancholy due to his divorce and these shelves could be a sort of visual trap for him. He doesn’t want to sign the divorce papers and he creates this trap in his old memories of his soon to be ex-wife.

Red Back Wall: Theodore is wearing a red coat and his apartment has a very noticeable red backlight that goes with what he always wears, red. Red is a very emotionally intense color that is associated with passion, desire, anger, and love. Theodore is going through a divorce and he is losing the love of his life and that could cause him to be angry with whatever went wrong in the relationship.

Week 12

Scene 1:

Brief Description: Theodore walks home from work. The color palette is red and brown.

Explanation: The colors, textures, & silhouette of the costume work with the set because of how the main character stands out from the rest of what the other people in the scene are wearing. The costume designer chose a bright color like red to draw my eye to the main character and made the extras wear neutral colors. The costume and set work together to tell the story of the scene because in this frame we can tell by the colors and arrangement of people who is important and who is not.

Scene 2:

Brief Description: Theodore meets with his wife to finally sign the divorce papers. The color palette is red-orange and gray.

Explanation: The colors, textures, & silhouette of the costume work with the set because of how Theodore is feeling and what he wears reflects that. The costume designer drew my eye to the main character because of the framing and composition. The costume and set work together to tell the story of the scene because we can see a contrast of where the characters are in life by Theodore’s shirt, which is the same shirt from the very beginning of the film and his wife wears white, which can mean a successful beginning and this divorce can mean the start of something new for herself.

Scene 3:

Brief Description: Theodore is panicking because Samantha, his OS (computer) girlfriend, is not responding to him. The color palette is yellow and brown.

Explanation: The colors, textures, & silhouette of the costume work with the set because Theodore is wearing a dull yellow and that color means jealousy, which is what he will feel later when he finds out that Samantha is talking to other people. The costume designer drew my eye to the main character because of the mirror framing in this particular shot. The costume and set work together to tell the story of the scene because the color of the costume really represents how Theodore is feeling in this situation and the combination of yellow and brown have a meaning of happiness and stability, which Theodore is not feeling at this moment, so the costume designer might have been going for the opposite effect with this choice. Over the course of the film, the character changed because in the last shot of the film he wore white and that was the color his wife was wearing when they signed the divorce papers. It means he is on the path to a new journey without Samantha and without his wife, just himself and his friend.

Week 13

Screenshot of Scene 1:

Brief Description: This is the opening scene of the film. Theodore is writing a letter for clients and the camera pans to see and hear the other workers.

Explanation of Lighting Palette: The mood of this scene is warm and welcoming. My emotional response to this is that I feel like this is an open spaced working environment where the workers can be poignant in their work. The lighting affected the story during the different scenes because of the natural sunlight coming through the ceiling and the red skylight seen on the wall.

Explanation of Sound: The sound affected the story during the different scenes because as the camera panned away from Theodore and showed the worker behind him the audio faded Theodore to the left and brought his co-worker into the center of the sound. The sound supports the lighting environment because the audio sounds soft and not too harsh on the ears.

Screenshot of Scene 2:

Brief Description: This is the ending scene where Samantha and all the other OS’s leave. Theodore is laying in bed listening to Samantha in his ear through an earbud.

Explanation of Lighting Palette: The mood of this scene is slightly warm and sad. My emotional response to this is that I felt the emotions that Theodore was going through in a way because he looked so utterly sad. I could see in his face that he was accepting that she was leaving and he had a moment of self reflection. The lighting affected the story during the different scenes because of the natural sunlight coming through the window and it gave off a realistic vibe to the scene. This scene differs from the first because of the mood is sets off to the audience, which is a sad mood.

Explanation of Sound: The sound affected the story during the different scenes because piano music was playing in the background and that added to the sad mood of the scene. The sound supports the lighting environment because the voice of Samantha sounded sterile and matched with the visual of the empty room and Theodore’s loneliness. The sound environment differs in this scene because there was ambient noise in this scene of the apartment room.

Week 14

Screenshots of Scene 1:

Brief Description: After Theodore comes home he plays a video game.

Explanation: This scene uses digital technology to further the story because it utilized rigging to mimic actual movements into animation. The mood of the scene is very cold and distant. Digital technology affects the outcome of the story or its effect on the audience because we can see that Theodore is lonely and plays video games to fill the void and also eat his dinner whilst he is playing the game.
